Nice summary. My experiences are similar about how the vast majority of occupy oaklander’s are peaceful and try to keep everyone peaceful.

Just to nitpick: Olsen was injured Tuesday night during the demonstrations, not Tuesday morning when the Plaza was overrun.

I love this piece! I’ve been really doing a lot of self inflection on the real honestly behind the buzz phrase “body acceptance” because I’ve recognized that as much as we’d like for it to be an ever changing trend, it is just not the truth. Like you’ve pointed out, anti-fat and other anti-body dogma are too much part of our vocabulary and collective conscious.

As a plus sized belly dancer, I can totally and completely identify with this. Many times I have had my doubts about participating in public dance… or taken on roles that play up the “butch” look for me, since I don’t fit the societal ‘ideal’ of what a woman should look like… it wasn’t until about two years ago that I was forcibly dragged from my shell by my passion for bellydance and the incredible satisfaction I got from performing…

Thanks for sharing your own self consciousness… you are incredibly beautiful and many of us tend to forget that all types of women have those societally perpetuated fears.
